Cheyenne Frontier Days Hall of Fame in 2007 Honors Paniolo Ikua Purdy

culture, frontier days, ikua purdy, national cowboy & western heritage museum rodeo hall of fame, world roping championship,

In 2008, it will have been 100 years since a paniolo - or Hawaiian cowboy - won the 1908 World Roping Championship at Frontier Days. Ikua Purdy of Waimea, Hawaii, stunned the cowboys of the American West with his victory. Until then (and even today), few people knew that cowboy culture in Hawaii outdates cowboys of the continental United States.

Purdy was known for his riding and roping skills, especially his prowess with the rawhide lariat.

A 1999 inductee into the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum Rodeo Hall of Fame, Purdy was inducted into the Cheyenne Frontier Days Hall of Fame in 2007.
